Protecting You and Your Rights

Toxic exposure includes substances that are known or suspected to cause harm or be life-threatening. The harm they cause can vary, from skin or eye irritation to financial damages to serious or fatal illness.

Exposure can occur at the workplace, at home, outdoors, or anywhere else. It most commonly results from inhalation or contact with the skin, and may be caused by air pollution; water contamination; nuclear radiation; hazardous materials; chemical fumes and residues; food poisoning; and even foul odors.

Toxic exposure like asbestos, lead poisoning, or massive oil spills can be devastating to an individual, families and communities. The harmful effects are not limited to health alone—they include other aspects of wellbeing like livelihood or access to natural resources.

  • Seeger Weiss represented close to 5,000 U.S. property owners against German company Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin (KPT), worldwide distributor of drywall manufactured in China. Many of the plaintiffs were rebuilding their homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, only to discover that their new drywall was toxic. As Lead Trial Counsel, the firm obtained successful verdicts in a succession of bellwether trials, leading to a national settlement valued at about $1 billion.
  • Seeger Weiss represented a massive class of nearly 600,000 consumers against automaker Volkswagen (VW), which equipped some of its Audi, Porsche and VW diesel vehicles in the U.S. with software designed to cheat emissions testing, polluting the environment at levels up to 40 times higher than registered. Working in conjunction with U.S. government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, Seeger Weiss served on the plaintiffs’ steering and settlement committees and as one of the lead negotiators, helping recover a $21 billion corporate settlement, the largest in history. It includes a massive buyback program for consumers, environmental remediation and investment in green vehicle technology. The firm continues to represent plaintiffs in the ongoing litigation.
  • Seeger Weiss represented 15 farmers in Missouri against giant agro-business Premium Standard Farms, over illegal disposal of waste products which degraded the air and land of the neighboring small farms, affecting their lives and livelihoods. A jury awarded the plaintiffs over $11 million.

An individual, company, organization or government entity may be liable for injury or illness resulting from toxic exposure even if they have taken steps to protect employees and others. Unfortunately, all too often large corporations have been found to knowingly ignore or even suppress information regarding hazardous materials, products and work environments.

Seeger Weiss has the experience and resources to take on well-financed corporations represented by large elite defense firms.
