Benicar Lawsuit

What is Benicar?

Benicar and Benicar HCT are prescription medications used to lower blood pressure (hypertension).  Doctors prescribe the medication alone or with other medicines used to treat high blood pressure.

Benicar was developed and marketed by Japanese pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo and was granted marketing approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2002.  Sankyo went on to spend nearly $1 billion dollars promoting Benicar and Benicar HCT by boasting it’s effectiveness and safety for high blood pressure patients.  According to the FDA, approximately 10.6 million prescriptions were dispensed of the drug in 2012 alone.

What’s Happening?  FDA & Mayo Clinic

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned on July 13, 2013 that the drugs “[marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor…] can cause intestinal problems known as sprue-like enteropathy”, which induces similar symptoms to celiac disease.

Before this warning was issued by the the FDA, a research team at the Mayo Clinic conducted a three year study between 2008 and 2011 in Rochester, Minnesota, in which doctors believed many patients who used the drug exhibited symptoms of celiac disease.  Doctors conducted further studies by withdrawing the patients from the drug after the biopsies taken of all 22 patients with a presumptive diagnosis of celiac disease showed no signs of the disease.  “In 22 patients, each had a substantial improvement or indeed remissions of their symptoms with withdrawal of the drug” according to Joesph A. Murry, MD, a Gastroenterologist for the Mayo Clinic.
