Lawsuits Against FieldTurf USA, Inc. for Defective Synthetic Turf
In August 2023, a class action lawsuit was certified against FieldTurf USA, Inc., representing 16 plaintiffs from across the United States, including Carteret, Hudson County, NJ, and the Newark Board of Education, as well as clients in New York, Pennsylvania, and California. One of the primary plaintiffs, the Borough of Carteret in New Jersey, invested $2 million to install turf manufactured by FieldTurf USA, Inc. in six public park fields.
Plaintiffs alleged that FieldTurf’s synthetic turf failed to meet the company’s promised standards, accusing the company of concealing known defects while exaggerating the turf’s lifespan and durability. According to the plaintiffs, FieldTurf ignored warranty claims, demanded costly repairs, and frequently failed to respond to communications, leaving schools and public agencies frustrated and inadequately supported.
Discovery in the case revealed that FieldTurf was aware of issues with its Duraspine turf long before discontinuing it. Despite these issues, the company had installed Duraspine on 1,428 fields nationwide, amounting to an estimated $570 million in installations.
In May 2024, Seeger Weiss, led by founding partner Chris Seeger, reached a class action settlement agreement with FieldTurf. Class members will receive compensation based on specific claim factors, including installation costs, documented communications with FieldTurf, and any applicable warranty provisions.
