Updated Seeger Weiss Partner Christopher Seeger Appointed to Lead Depo-Provera Products Liability Litigation

RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ – Seeger Weiss founding partner Christopher Seeger has been appointed lead counsel in the Depo-Provera Products Liability Litigation by the Honorable Judge M. Casey Rodgers of the Northern District of Florida. In addition to Seeger’s leadership role, partner Caleb Seeley has been named to the Plaintiff Steering Committee, and senior partner Dave Buchanan will serve as Chair of the Trial Subcommittee while also serving on the ESI and Discovery Subcommittee.

The litigation, consolidated in multidistrict proceedings, claims Pfizer misrepresented the long-term safety of the injectable birth control Depo-Provera and failed to warn of the increased risk of intracranial meningiomas, a type of brain tumor. A 2024 study published in The British Medical Journal found that women who used Depo-Provera for over a year had a 5.5 times higher risk of intracranial meningioma. Other types of birth control did not have the same risk.

“We appreciate Judge Rodgers’ appointment and confidence in our firm,” said Seeger. “We look forward to litigating this case with Mr. Aylstock, Ms. Relkin, and others appointed by the Court to ensure Pfizer and its subsidiaries are held accountable for knowingly selling Depo-Provera birth control despite knowing it could cause meningiomas, a serious and often life-altering brain tumor.”

Chris Seeger, co-founding partner of Seeger Weiss, has led some of the most complex, groundbreaking, and high-profile litigations in the U.S. He played a pivotal role in securing over $50 billion in opioid litigation settlements and a $6 billion settlement in the landmark 3M Combat Arms Earplug Litigation. Among his other top wins are a $1.075 billion settlement in the Philips CPAP litigation, a $4.85 billion Vioxx settlement, and a $1 billion-plus uncapped settlement in the NFL concussion case. Chris was recently appointed as Plaintiffs’ Coordinating Counsel in the MultiPlan Health Insurance Providers Litigation.

Senior partner Dave Buchanan represents individual and corporate plaintiffs in state and federal courts nationwide. Dave was appointed as co-lead counsel for the Self-Funded Payer Track in the In re: Insulin Pricing Litigation. He has also served as Chair of the Discovery & ESI Subcommittee in the 3M Combat Arms Earplug Litigation, the largest mass tort in American history, co-led the negotiation of discovery orders and litigated disputes before the Special Master in the Philips CPAP, Bi-Level PAP and Mechanical Ventilator Products Liability Litigation, and was co-chair of discovery as well as lead counsel in several bellwether trials in the Vioxx Litigation.

Caleb Seeley a partner at Seeger Weiss since January 2023, played a key role in the 3M Combat Arms Earplug Litigation, helping secure verdicts of $50 million, $55 million, and $1.7 million in bellwether trials, culminating in a $6 billion settlement for injured service members. Caleb also contributed to a $1.075 billion settlement in the Philips CPAP litigation, successfully opposing critical motions and assisting in negotiating compensation for affected plaintiffs.

One of the nation’s preeminent plaintiffs’ law firms, Seeger Weiss is best known for multidistrict mass torts and class actions in both state and federal court—and especially for taking those cases to trial. With the resources and dedication to take on the world’s largest corporations, the firm has an impressive track record of victories against companies like Merck, Monsanto, and 3M—and a reputation for sticking with a case from beginning to end. From offices in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, the firm has represented over 10,000 individuals, companies, and governments across the United States who have been injured or defrauded on a massive scale. Since its founding in 1999, it has led many of the most complex and high-profile cases in the country: the National Prescription Opiate Litigation, which the Washington Post called “the largest federal court case in U.S. history”; the “Dieselgate” scandal; the sprawling multistate litigation on behalf of survivors of child sexual abuse; and the history-making National Football League Players’ Concussion Injury Litigation.
