Information on the Roblox Child Sexual Abuse Lawsuit
Gaming platform Roblox is facing hundreds of lawsuits over concerns about their failure to protect minors from exploitation, grooming and sexual abuse. Roblox sexual abuse lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Roblox is a gaming platform which allows users to create 3D video games virtual worlds and play millions of games and experiences created by other users. Users may create custom avatars and though it is free to use, avatars and gaming experiences may be upgraded using real money to purchase accessories or in-game features. Users may also chat with friends and play games together in real-time.
Estimates show that as many as two-thirds of children as young as 9 years old may have used Roblox. It has branded itself as a safe place for users of all ages, including children, to play and create. Though Roblox reportedly separated minors from adults and restricted sexual and abusive content, lawsuits claim that the company failed to enforce policies and barriers, leaving children prey to sexual predators and grooming.
Roblox Allowed Predators to Contact Children
Using Roblox games, child predators may have initiated contact with a child through in-game chat during game play, sending direct messages and then moving the contact to conversations on Discord, Snapchat, Whatsapp, Telegram and even Instagram with “disappearing messages” or untrackable conversations conducted in real time.
Exploitation may have progressed to actual contact between the adult and child and in some cases resulted in violent attacks upon the child. Some social media sites have videos with instructions of how to “beat” current platform age estimates and Roblox has not implemented procedures to guarantee children’s safety.
In addition, some games or experiences on Roblox have been created as virtual worlds known as “condos” which may be entirely created for activities such as simulated sexual acts between avatars. There is no age verification required to enter these rooms.
Roblox has used claims that the company is not actually responsible for content created on the platform, but lawsuits claim that the company solicited and encouraged use while failing to enforce safeguards.
Roblox Profits by Sales of In-game Currency Known as Robux
Roblox has been accused of keeping young users engaged while using tactics to profit from actual purchases of gaming “money” known as “Robux” and leaving them vulnerable. Predators have used gifts of Robux to lure and entice minors into inappropriate contact and relationships.
Robux are intended to allow users to buy new avatars or gaming advantages. Sexual predators may have used offers of Robux to encourage minors to provide sexually explicit photographs and information to adults or even to meet these sexual predators in person.
Many families have also faced financial hardships due to in-game purchases using parent credit or debit cards without permission. There is no process for verifying that the purchaser is the owner of the card used for payment.
Roblox Environment May Have Protected Predators
California-based videogame platform Roblox is rated as “T” by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, indicating it is suitable for ages 13 and up. A T rating indicates that games may feature violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, mild blood, simulated gambling, and strong language.
Though the platform has a T rating, Roblox’s branding message indicates the platform is “kid-friendly” which may overcome parental objections to online gaming. The platform states users must be over the age of 13 but does not require identification which may allow children under 13 to access the platform. It may also allow adults to pose as other teenagers while playing the game.
This may encourage young teenagers, and even children under 13 to have online contact with predatory adults. In some cases, teenagers and children may have been subject to in-person abuse after being groomed on the platform.
Roblox Lawsuit Claims
Roblox began facing legal problems as early as 2022 when Roblox was accused of failing to protect a 10-year-old girl from contact with adult men. The contact ultimately led to mental health challenges including multiple suicide attempts. The first state lawsuit was filed in 2024 by the State of California, the state where the violent incident abuse reportedly occurred. In 2025, the FBI issued a warning after a 10-year-old was reportedly kidnapped by an adult male she met on Roblox. By July of that year, over 1,200 Roblox reports had been filed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Roblox has faced numerous lawsuits filed by multiple states including Louisiana, Iowa, Nevada, Alabama West Virginia, Arkansas, and others. Many of these lawsuits have already resulted in settlements and agreements to fund safety campaigns and take additional steps to keep children safe but families may have already been harmed.
Over one thousand lawsuits against Roblox have already been filed by parents of children who experienced exploitation or sexual abuse while using or after using the platform. Claims include:
- Failure to restrict minors using the platform from exposure to sexual abuse
- Failure to monitor harmful communication between children and adults
- Failure to adequately verify age of users or provide parental safeguards
- Failure to warn parents of known risks of exploitation and sexual abuse
