New Jersey considered the Smartest State
What a honor! New Jersey is ranked the smartest state with the highest per capita concentration of engineers and scientists in the country. In 2001, New Jersey’s universities graduated more than 11,000 scientists and engineers into the electronics, information, communications and technology (ICT), and the telecommunications industries. More than 140,000 engineers and scientists live, work and play in New Jersey, the highest assembly of scientific brainpower in the nation.
New Jersey prides itself on supporting a diverse set of industries from chemicals, transportation (through the Port Authority, large container port), oil refineries to agriculture. However, New Jersey’s foothold in the following technical industries is most impressive:
Information, Communications and Technology (ICT)
From the inventions of Thomas Edison more than 100 years ago, New Jersey continues its historic drive toward innovation. New Jersey is a leader in electronics nanotechnology and ceramic and composite materials research. The state leads the nation in electronics R&D and the number of patents granted for instrumentation. Many of the first optoelectronic technologies were invented in New Jersey, helping it today rank as the fourth-largest state for photonics manufacturing and research.
Biotechnology
There are 116 biotech companies in New Jersey, making it the fourth-largest biotech center in the country. And what a center it has become. It has the third-highest concentration of life science employment in the nation where 6,000 people are employed with Biotech companies. New Jersey state-funded incubators and university-based programs are a contributor to this success.
Pharmaceuticals
Pharmaceutical heavyweights love New Jersey’s business climate and local amenities. Its leading hospitals and universities, research institutions, and supporting laboratories, make it an ideal location for 14 of the 25 largest drug companies.
Some call New Jersey the "Medicine Chest of the Nation,” because nearly half the nations’ R& D investment in new medicine occurs here—about $15 billion.
Pharmaceutical and medical technology companies contributed $20 billion to the New Jersey’s economy in 2001, including $2.4 billion in capital investments, $92 million in charitable donations, and $55 million in outsourced research and clinical trials.
Research & Development
As one of the leading research centers of the world, New Jersey beats its rivals “hands down” for R&D funding and technological achievement. New Jersey is home to more than 25 contract research centers that enjoy the close proximity of—Rutgers, Princeton, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry—who are among the top-100 R&D universities in the country, and account for more than $400 million in R&D.
