Motorcycle Accidents

Each year many thousands of people are injured or killed in motor vehicle accidents. Accidents also account for the loss of billions of dollars in property damage and medical fees annually. Most accidents involve passenger cars, however, trucks and motorcycles also account for much of the toll in injuries, deaths, and monetary losses. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released data concerning traffic accidents on a nationwide basis for the year 2004. The information is overwhelming as there were an estimated 6,181,000 traffic accidents reported to the police in 2004. These 6 million plus accidents resulted in 42,636 deaths and 2,788,000 injuries.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycles make up a small percentage of motor vehicles on the road, yet motorcycle accidents accounted for approximately 9 percent of all fatalities from traffic accidents in the year 2004. According to 2003 statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle riders were 32 times more likely to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and 6 times more likely to be injured than occupants in passenger cars per vehicle mile traveled. Motorcycle accidents were also responsible for approximately 76,000 injuries in the year 2004.

Reckless Motorcycle Accidents

According to 2004 statistics, motor vehicle accidents involving motorcycles are often the result of reckless behavior as the percentage of fatal crashes involving the driver speeding was two times as high for motorcycle drivers as opposed to drivers of passenger cars or light trucks. According to the NHTSA, 36 percent of motorcyclists in fatal crashes were speeding. Also, the percentage of accidents involving alcohol was approximately 31 percent higher in motorcycle accidents.

Statute of Limitations

Most states have set strict time limitations during which one can recover for any personal injuries resulting from a car, truck, or motorcycle accident. If you do not secure your rights within the applicable time period, you may permanently lose your opportunity to bring a claim for personal injuries sustained. Since the ability to recover for your damages is very time sensitive, it is important that you contact an experienced attorney immediately.
