Philadelphia, PA –Christopher A. Seeger, Co-Lead Counsel for the retired NFL player plaintiffs in In Re: National Football League Players Concussion Injury Litigation, responded today to the Court’s granting of final approval of the settlement in the NFL concussion litigation this afternoon:

“Nearly four years ago, retired NFL players embarked on a mission that many thought to be impossible: to obtain security and care for the devastating neurocognitive injuries they were experiencing.

“Today, these courageous men and their families have made history.  Despite the difficult health situations retired players face today, and that many more will unfortunately face in the future, they can take comfort that this settlement’s benefits will be available soon, and will last for decades to come.

“With over 99 percent participation, it is clear the retired player community overwhelmingly supports this agreement.  Indeed, throughout this settlement process, we have heard directly from countless retired players who are in dire need of these benefits – whether a spouse caring for her husband with ALS, a retiree who just received a diagnosis of dementia, or those who feel fine today but want a baseline assessment and an opportunity to speak with experts about the future.  Their most common question has been how quickly they can get help.

“Assuming no appeals are filed, the settlement will become effective in 30 days, and the benefits process will open as soon as this summer.  If any objector appeals the final approval order, however, no benefits will become available until this process is exhausted – which will take months, if not years to resolve.

“Any class member with questions should consult their legal counsel. More information about the settlement and updates on the registration process can also be found at https://www.nflconcussionsettlement.com/.”
