The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is alleging that Fiat Chrysler installed software on its 2014, 2015, and 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees that allowed the SUVs’ diesel engines to spew excess emissions into the air.

The news broke in January 2017, with the EPA and California Air Resource Board announcing jointly that it believed Fiat Chrysler’s emissions control software permits the vehicles to emit nitrous oxide beyond what is permitted by the Clean Air Act, and that the company had failed to make proper disclosures about the software.

The EPA said it was investigating whether or not the software installed constitutes a “defeat device,” an illegal add-on intended to fool regulators by falsely reporting the vehicle’s emissions.

The automaker has disputed the regulatory agency’s allegations, saying in a statement that it “intends to work with the incoming administration to present its case and resolve this matter fairly and equitably and to assure the EPA and FCA US customers that the company's diesel-powered vehicles meet all applicable regulatory requirements.”
