Whirlpool Duet Mold Problems

Homeowners are always looking for ways to reduce their energy bills, and many are also looking for ways to reduce their water consumption. Front-load washing machines have been marketed as a means to simultaneously achieve both of those goals. The drum in front load washing machines has a horizontal rotational axis as opposed to top load washing machines whose drum has a vertical rotational axis. Due to its design a top load washing machine needs to completely fill with water to submerge a full load. A front load washing machine can fill only partly with water and submerge a full load cyclically through each rotation, using less water per load. Though front load industrial washing machines are routinely used in Laundromats with no known problems, home use front load washing machines suffer a serious design flaw.

Whirlpool Duet - Mold Problems

After a short time of use mold begins to grow inside of front-load washers, like those from the Whirlpool Duet series, causing a foul, moldy smell to permeate clothing washed in the machine. Attempts to ventilate the machine by leaving the door open may only cause the smell to fill the room. Running an empty cycle with bleach may alleviate but not eliminate the mold problem, and wastes water. The higher cost of front load machines is justified by their greater efficiency, however attempts to eliminate the mold may reduce the efficiency of the machine and may be unsuccessful or only temporarily effective. In return for the higher cost consumers receive a machine that leaves their clothing smelling moldy.
