Laptop Battery Life Not Up to Manufacturer Claims

Shopping for laptops is an exhausting task; there are thousands of different models to choose from, and millions of different configurations to select. Comparing laptops on a spec by spec basis is time-consuming and frustrating. Manufacturers and retailers of laptops often include 'benchmark' software scores for laptop performance to help compare models. Some benchmarks may try to quantify processor performance, others quantify hard disk performance and some provide an estimate of battery life during 'normal use.' Mobile Mark 2007 is one of the most commonly used benchmarks to measure such factors as battery life. Unfortunately for consumers, Mobile Mark 2007 consistently and grossly overestimates the amount of time that can be expected from a laptop's battery during every day normal use. Manufacturers and computer retailers quote the expected battery life according to Mobile Mark 2007 in the product specifications, but when the consumer actually uses the computer the battery never lasts as long. Worse still, consumers risk losing the ability to use the laptop in the middle of a presentation or just before a deadline is met.
