Ford Edge PTU Failures
The Ford Edge is one of Ford's 'crossover' vehicles which includes styling and functionality that is somewhere between a van, a station wagon, and a small SUV. The Edge comes in front wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) varieties. The Ford Edge, along with other crossover vehicles from other manufacturers, attempts to provide the fuel efficiency of a station wagon with the increased cargo capacity of a minivan, along with the slightly higher ride-height of an SUV. AWD crossovers like the Ford Edge appeal to people who live in areas where the road conditions can become treacherous in some seasons, but who are not interested in paying for the poor fuel economy of traditional SUV's.
Unfortunately for many consumers, the Ford Edge AWD has not proved to be a reliable vehicle, suffering from a design flaw in the AWD system. After little use, the Ford Edge Power Transfer Unit smokes and malfunctions, requiring replacement at the dealership. Many consumers have waited for several weeks while their dealership received the replacement parts from Ford.
