Orthopedic Producer Zimmer Holdings Recalls Durom Cup Artificial Hip Implant
On July 24, 2008, Zimmer Holdings, the nation's largest producer of orthopedic devices, suspended U.S. sales of an artificial hip implant component, known as the 'Durom cup,' due to a high failure rate. Zimmer has sold nearly 12,000 of the implants in the United States since 2006. In April 2008, Dr. Lawrence Dorr, an orthopedic surgeon in Los Angeles, California, publicly warned other orthopedists about the high number of cup failures his patients were experiencing. In a July 24, 2008 interview, Dr. Dorr told the New York Times that the Durom Cup was "a bad design." Zimmer denies that the implants are defective but in a letter to orthopedic surgeons dated July 22, 2008, acknowledged that some patients with the Durom Cup implant may require revision surgery. Critics of the device fear that hundreds of patients may require implant replacement.
