AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution Withdrawn from Market
AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution, a popular product manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics, used for the daily cleaning and disinfection of contact lenses, has been withdrawn from the market. On May 26, 2007, Advanced Medical Optics stated that use of the product had been linked to reports of Acanthamoeba keratitis. Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection that can lead to a corneal transplant or removal of an eye. The infection can be both difficult to diagnose and to treat.
Advanced Medical Optics advised customers to stop using the product and to discard all partially used or unopened bottles. They further advised customers to throw out their current contact lenses and lens storage cases.
Investigators have identified 138 laboratory confirmed cases of the infection and have discovered that the risk of developing the infection was at least seven times greater for those people who used the Advanced Medical Optics Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution product than for those who did not.
