Christopher A. Seeger Named to Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America
September 19, 2007
Seeger Weiss LLP, one of the nation's premier plaintiffs' law firms, is pleased to announce that founding partner Christopher A. Seeger has been named to the third annual Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America. This is the second consecutive year that Mr. Seeger has been honored as one of the best 500 lawyers nationwide.
Katrina Dewey, CEO and Publisher of Lawdragon, said, "Chris Seeger has emerged at the forefront of a new group of leaders in American law, who are smart, dedicated and passionate about justice and helping their clients. With the members of his firm, he has made an impression on leading lawyers and judges across the nation for his work in complicated class action litigation."
Mr. Seeger's co-founder Stephen A. Weiss, and partners David R. Buchanan and Jonathan Shub, were named as finalists to the list, which is an elite group of the nation's 2,800 leading lawyers and judges chosen from across the country in a range of practices from antitrust to zoning.
Mr. Seeger has been counsel in several high profile cases including:
- the 2007 jury verdict of compensatory and punitive damages against Merck & Co. in the amount of $47.5 million in a Vioxx related personal injury lawsuit;
- the national $700 million settlement from Eli Lilly & Co. for patients who claimed that they had developed diabetes while taking Zyprexa;
- the federal Vioxx Multidistrict Litigation, in which he was unanimously selected by the Vioxx plaintiffs' lawyers to co-lead the litigation of nearly 27,000 separate cases against Merck & Co, was appointed to co-lead the Plaintiff's Steering Committee and was named one of only three members of the Executive Committee which enables Mr. Seeger to develop the overall litigation strategy as well as select witnesses, gather evidence, choose expert witnesses, and meet regularly with the judge and opposing counsel;
- the closely watched New Jersey Vioxx Litigation, in which Mr. Seeger was appointed as Liaison Counsel and Co-lead Counsel for the approximately 16,000 individual cases;
- current representation of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #68 Welfare Fund and other similarly-situated third-party payors in their suit against Merck to recover money that they paid for Vioxx prescriptions;
- a $2 million verdict against Pfizer on behalf of a Brooklyn resident who had sustained liver injuries following her Rezulin use. Mr. Seeger was also appointed to the Executive Committee in the federal suits coordinated by the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation and served as a member of the Plaintiffs Steering Committee in the Rezulin New Jersey state and the New York state litigation, which have been settled; and
- In re PPA products liability litigation, in which he served as Lead Counsel, resulting in the 2004 nationwide settlement of all PPA related injury claims resulting from the ingestion of Dexatrim.
More than 20,000 attorneys were nominated for the list by their peers and the Lawdragon editorial staff, who selected 2,800 finalists. The Lawdragon 500 was selected from that group, based on a proprietary system that takes into account dozens of qualifications that are scored to determine the best lawyers nationwide. Those named to the list represent less than one-half of one percent of the legal profession, placing them among the most elite group of legal professionals. Among the factors utilized in the list's selection are extensive research by a staff of award-winning journalists who interview thousands of lawyers nationwide and a survey of lawyers and general counsel who nominate and vote for their peers online.
