The Food and Drug Administration is poised to issue new warnings about the dangers of indoor tanning devices, like tanning beds and tanning lamps. At their headquarters today, the FDA reviewed tanning bed regulations after a recent study linked the devices to skin cancer. The Melanoma Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to find a cure for melanoma, a type of skin cancer, reports that exposure to tanning beds before the age of 30 increases a person's risk of developing melanoma by 75 percent.Federal health experts insisted that more restrictions are needed to protect teenagers from the cancer risks of tanning beds. The FDA is weighing a potential ban on indoor tanning for people under 18. At a minimum, the FDA is moving forward with clearer labeling on indoor tanning devices that would clearly state that ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer. Current warning labels are in a paragraph format that says "repeated exposure may cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer."
