Seeger Weiss named to National Law Journal’s Plaintiffs Hot List for 2009

NEW YORK (October 7, 2009) – Reflecting another strong year of major trial wins, multi-million dollar settlements and key leadership appointments in a variety of complex litigation matters, law firm Seeger Weiss LLP has once again been named to the National Law Journal’s Plaintiffs Hot List.

This is the third straight year that the New York-based firm, now with 30 lawyers in five offices, has been included among the NLJ’s selection of the country’s top plaintiffs’ counsel This year’s roster includes 15 firms that the legal newspaper of record says represents “the bar’s best qualities” through “exemplary, cutting-edge work.”

The NLJ cited Seeger Weiss’s success in “prevailing in a bench or jury trial when the stakes are high,” and for “demonstrating unusual flair and creativity.” The editors also took note of the firm’s versatility across a “broad span of cases apart from its core strengths in pharmaceuticals and mass torts.” Since its founding, the firm, co-managed by Christopher Seeger and Stephen Weiss, has distinguished itself as a “renaissance litigation boutique.”

“We are honored to again be included in the NLJ’s short list of the country’s leading plaintiffs firms – especially knowing that selection is not only based on the size of financial recoveries or a winning track record at trial, but also for the quality and character of your work,” said Mr. Seeger. “The recognition is a testament to all of our attorneys and professional staff as we continue to strive for exemplary advocacy on behalf of our clients.”

This year’s selection was also noteworthy following the firm’s outsized success in 2008, in which Seeger Weiss played a lead role in structuring the record-setting $4.85 billion global settlement with Merck to compensate patients who suffered cardiovascular injuries linked to the company’s anti-inflammatory medication Vioxx. NLJ editors noted that without losing step, Seeger Weiss kept pace over the past 12 months, securing more than $1 billion in pharma cases alone, in matters led by Mr. Seeger and partner David Buchanan. The NLJ also called attention to Stephen Weiss’s initiatives in filing some of the first investor lawsuits stemming from the Bernard Madoff “Ponzi” fraud.

The NLJ highlighted three matters in particular for its Hot List write-up: Seeger Weiss’s $745 million settlement with Pfizer over claims related to the company’s own anti-inflammatory pain medications Bextra and Celebrex; the firm’s $23.5 million in jury awards against Hoffman LaRoche on behalf of patients who suffered severe, chronic stomach injuries related to powerful – and now discontinued – acne medication Accutane; and a collective $140 million in settlements for third-party health care plans, including $80 million tied to improper, off-label marketing of Merck’s Vioxx.

“Across all of our litigation, our firm has taken pride in advancing leading edge theories and causes of action, and also in going the distance against the biggest, smartest and best-funded defense firms in the country,” said Mr. Weiss. “Continued recognition by the NLJ for its Hot List shows that our work has made a real impact on the plaintiffs bar, and has been appreciated and respected by the profession. We hope to similarly distinguish ourselves for years to come.”
