National Law Journal Names Seeger Weiss LLP to 2007 Plaintiffs' Hot List

Seeger Weiss LLP, one of the nation's premier plaintiffs' law firms, is pleased to announce that the firm has been named to the National Law Journal's prestigious Plaintiffs' Hot List for 2007, published on October 22.

The Plaintiffs' Hot List, which is based on reader nominations and editorial review, requires that a winning firm devote at least half of its resources to plaintiffs' work and that the firm has won a significant bench or jury verdict in the past year or otherwise defined an industry practice. In describing Seeger Weiss, the National Law Journal editors wrote: "Don't let their relative youth mislead you. The attorneys at New York-based Seeger Weiss are all on the dewy side of 50, but rank among the country's top plaintiffs' lawyers. Name partner Christopher A. Seeger, for example, was appointed plaintiffs' co-lead attorney in the Vioxx multidistrict litigation in New Orleans, and in 2005 was chief negotiator in a $700 million settlement for patients who took Eli Lilly & Co.'s anti-schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, which has been linked to diabetes. Stephen A. Weiss, meanwhile, has been causing a stink over pollution caused by factory farms."

The editors selected the following Seeger Weiss cases to underscore the firm's impact as a leading plaintiffs' law firm:

  • Humeston v. Merck: Lead co-counsel Christopher A. Seeger, with significant contributions by David R. Buchanan, Moshe Horn, Laurence Nassif and Jeffrey Grand, obtained a $47.5 million jury award against Merck & Co. in Merck's home state of New Jersey, for injuries caused by Merck's arthritis drug Vioxx.
  • Adwell v. Premium Standard Farms and ContiGroup: The Seeger Weiss team, led by Stephen A. Weiss with assistance from Michael S. Farkas, served as co-lead trial counsel in securing a $4.5 million verdict against industrial hog producers Premium Standard Farms, Inc. and ContiGroup Companies, Inc. for damages caused by their pollution, on behalf of six neighbors of the defendants' vast farm operations in northern Missouri. The firm continues to represent 250 plaintiffs in this case.
  • McCarrell v. Hoffmann La-Roche Inc. and Roche Laboratories: Seeger Weiss and its co-trial counsel obtained a $2.62 million verdict against Hoffman La-Roche on behalf of an Alabama resident who suffered severe gastrointestinal injuries resulting from his use of the acne treatment Accutane. The trial was the first of 400 similar Accutane cases to go to trial in New Jersey. The Seeger Weiss team was led by David Buchanan, with support from Michael L. Rosenberg.

"To be recognized for our hard work, determination and our willingness-often against long odds-to match resources with deep pocket defendants in order to avenge the rights of ordinary citizens victimized by corporate abuse, negligence or environmental abandon, is a truly an honor," said founding partner Christopher A. Seeger. "We are thrilled to be included with such an esteemed group of lawyers and law firms who have also displayed commendable achievements in the last twelve months."
