Con Ed Worker Killed in Manhole Explosion in Brooklyn

A Con Ed worker was killed early Friday morning in a blast that shook the area and sent 8 foot tall flames out of the manhole located at the intersection of Euclid and Sutter Avenues in Brooklyn. The precise cause of the explosion is not yet known, but the manhole gave access to 120v power lines on which George Dillman, the worker who was killed, was working. Craig Penney, a coworker of Mr. Dillman, who was not in the manhole at the time of the explosion, rushed to attempt to extinguish the fire or otherwise help his friend escape, but was unable to because of the extreme heat. Mr. Penney suffered minor burns from his attempts to help.
