Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation Awards Special Commendation to Christopher A. Seeger and Seeger Weiss LLP

May 17, 2010

Last week, Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation Co-General Counsel, Christopher A. Seeger of Seeger Weiss LLP, represented pro bono the family of Special Agent Dillon at an administrative appeal hearing. Dillon had over 24 years of service to the State of California as an officer of the law: 12 years with the California Highway Patrol as a traffic officer and over 12 years as an investigator with the California Department of Justice. He was assigned to the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement for 9 years, during which time he helped in the inspection and dismantling of many meth labs and was exposed to various carcinogens, mostly in the days before hazmat suits were the norm. In July of 2006 Officer Dillon was diagnosed with kidney cancer and passed away 9 months later, leaving behind his wife and two children, now ages 16 and 13.

The original application to PSOB was submitted without any documentation of exposure, and ultimately benefits were denied.

Representing the surviving family, Mr. Seeger will be seeking to reverse the earlier determination that Officer Dillon’s death was not in the line of duty for the purpose of PSOB benefits. Mr. Seeger and his team are not only working pro bono, but are expending significant sums of their own monies for the Dillon family and to advance the cause of the BOHMF. They have borne their own expenses in traveling to California, in preparing all hearing materials, and most notably for expert witnesses that will be testifying on behalf of the Dillon family at the hearing.

For a number of reasons this is an uphill battle, and I am sure everyone reading this appreciates the potential ramifications of this matter for public safety officers everywhere. Mr. Seeger  and his law firm were the lawyers behind the $4.5 billion recovery for victims of disease associated with the drug Vioxx and many other causes where consumers have fallen victim to the toxic exposure to drugs and other products. If anyone is capable of mounting this effort, it is Mr. Seeger and Seeger Weiss.

For Mr. Seeger and his firm’s effort on behalf of the Dillon family, for their efforts in advancing the cause of the Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation, and for the incredible donation of their time and the very substantial monetary sums it takes to prosecute a hearing of this nature, the Executive Committee is issuing a special commendation to Mr. Seeger and Seeger Weiss LLP.

On behalf of law enforcement officers everywhere, we thank you and we salute you.
