Steroid-related Fungal Meningitis Outbreaks Investigated by Seeger Weiss

By: Seeger Weiss LLP on October 23, 2012

We, at Seeger Weiss, are investigating individual claims for lawsuits against the Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.

Over 200 cases of steroid-related fungal meningitis and 19 deaths have been reported, leading to what NBC News claimed may be “the worst such outbreak of fungal meningitis in U.S. history.”  Many are blaming the New England Compounding Center of Framingham for dirty conditions, faulty sterilizing equipment, tainted ingredients and sloppiness on the part of employees.  We, at Seeger Weiss, are investigating individual claims for lawsuits against the Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.

It has been reported that most of the victims had received steroid injections for back pain, but some people may have received the injections for pain in other joints, such as their ankles, knees, hips or shoulders. Spinal injections, particularly, can provide fungal meningitis a pathway into the brain.  As a result, Meningitis can lead to a number of devastating complications, including hearing loss, blindness, brain damage, kidney failure, paralysis, and death.

Compounding pharmacies, like the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, are supposed to follow health and safety guidelines found in the U.S. Pharmacopeia.  However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is leading a criminal investigation against the compound for allegedly negligent practices.

Health officials have stated that up to 14,000 people in over 20 states may have received the injections.  The incubation period for fungal meningitis is anywhere between a few days to a month, so health officials believe the number of victims will increase.  If you or someone you know has been a victim of tainted steroid injections, please contact us.
