Seeger Weiss Named To Top Tier of New York City Class Action Firms
November 22, 2011
NEW YORK, NY (November 22, 2011) – U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Firms” has named Seeger Weiss LLP to the first tier of New York City Mass Tort Litigation and Class Action Plaintiffs' firms. The 2011-2012 edition will mark the second release of these prestigious rankings, and the second year that Seeger Weiss has been honored with inclusion. Among the factors considered by the panel that compiles the list are client feedback, peer evaluations, and the firm’s demographics. This year’s publication showcases close to 10,000 law firms from across the country. U.S. News notes that to be selected for the top tier of a practice area, as Seeger Weiss has been, “is a special distinction that signals a unique combination of excellence and breadth of expertise.” The complete rankings can be found here.
The accolade comes after yet another successful year for Seeger Weiss. At the beginning of 2011, founding partner Christopher A. Seeger was appointed to the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee in the complicated multidistrict litigation regarding DePuy Orthopaedics’ defective hip replacements. Additionally, partner Jonathan Shub was named co-lead counsel in a class action against Zynga, the makers of FarmVille. Founding partner Stephen A. Weiss also served as trial counsel in an extensive case brought by a class of hog farmers against agro-giant, Premium Standard Farms. The verdict of $11 million was the largest known of its kind against a factory hog operator. More recently, partner David R. Buchanan played a crucial role in the case of a Utah woman who developed Inflammatory Bowel Disease after taking the drug Accutane, which resulted in an award of $10.6 million. When the verdict was appealed, Mr. Buchanan argued before the New Jersey Supreme Court on his client’s behalf.
With a number of practices, including asbestos, personal injury, class actions, and drug injury however, Seeger Weiss has been enjoying considerable success prior to the past year. Mr. Seeger and Mr. Buchanan, for example, both have served as liaison counsel for the New Jersey coordinated proceedings in Accutane litigation. In 2010, the firm made headlines when it secured a $25.16 million verdict in a pivotal case against Accutane manufacturer, Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. Partner Michael L. Rosenberg served on the trial team alongside Mr. Buchanan, who was appointed co-trial counsel.
Later that year, Mr. Seeger also served on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the first of many cases involving faulty Chinese drywall. The bellwether trial concluded in a $2.6 million victory for the plaintiffs.
Seeger Weiss has recovered millions of dollars for victims of asbestos and mesothelioma across the nation as well. These cases include a $3.1 million settlement on behalf of an auto mechanic and Navy veteran diagnosed with mesothelioma at age 61, and a $2 million settlement for an 80 year-old California man who developed mesothelioma after working in several shipyards.
