Severe Mirena IUD Issues – Force Warning and Lawsuits
High Incidences of Complications Associated with Mirena IUD Prompt FDA Warning Letter to Bayer
Mirena IUD is a type of hormonal intrauterine device used for long-term birth control. It is produced by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Bayer’s product, the Mirena IUD, was marketed to be effective for up to five years with hormone emission, providing permanent birth control during that period and improving a woman’s health and sex life. The product has fallen short of this claim and is forcing many women to file Mirena lawsuits.
The Mirena IUD became available to U.S. markets with FDA approval in 2000. However, it has experienced a multitude of issues. According to FDA reports, there have been more than 45,000 cases of reactions or serious injuries that have occurred. The most serious Mirena IUD issues have involved ectopic pregnancy (where a fertilized egg begins to grow in the fallopian tube versus a women’s uterus). Uterus puncture has also been another serious problem.
Have You Experienced Problems?
Women have experienced the following Mirena IUD issues.
- Ovarian cysts
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Pelvic infection
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Cervical or endometrial cancer
- Cervical or uterine perforation
- Significant elevation of blood pressure
- Endometritis, or inflammation of the endometrium
The FDA released a Warning Letter to Bayer stating that:
“The use of Mirena is associated with a number of risks, including warnings regarding the increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, and irregular bleeding and amenorrhea. Additional warnings include the risk of Mirena embedding in, perforating, or being expelled from the uterus, as well as the increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, and the risks to an intrauterine pregnancy that occurs with Mirena in place. Should a woman become pregnant while using Mirena, serious risks include pregnancy loss and permanent loss of fertility.”
Because of the number of Mirena IUD issues that grossly contradict marketing material saying the product is safe, many women have pursued Mirena IUD lawsuits suing for recovery through the legal system.
