Recalled Lasko Box Fans

Seeger Weiss is investigating Lasko Box Fans that, due to a design defect, can in normal use, overheat, smoke, and catch fire. These fans have been the subject of numerous incidents causing substantial property damage. In response to these numerous incidents, as well as many customer complaints, the Lasko Box Fans have been the subject of two recalls mandated by the United States Consumer Products Safety Commission. The first recall was mandated on February 8, 2006, and affected approximately 5.6 million portable electric fans sold under the following brand names and model numbers:
  • Lasko 2135, 3300, 3400, 3410, 3510, 3515, 3521, 3550, 3700, 3723, 3733, 3750, 3800
  • Galaxy 3733
  • General Electric 106600, 106620, 106630,
  • Air King 9500 and 9515

The second recall was mandated on March 24, 2011 and affects approximately 4.8 million portable electric fans sold under the following brand names and model numbers: Lasko 3720, 3723, and 3733, and Galaxy 4733, with date codes of “2002-03” or “2003-04.”

Instead of refunding consumers purchase price, repairing the fans or furnishing consumers with replacement fans without the defect, Lasko instead offers consumers a “fan protection cord adapter” which is essentially a short extension cord with a wall plug on one end and a locking receptacle on the other with a fuse between the two. Once the “fan protection cord adapter” is locked in place, it cannot be removed. As the installation of the “fan protection cord adapter” is effectively permanent, once the fuse blows, the fan is effectively destroyed and valueless.

Lasko has apparently continued to utilize the same defective motor design in their fans. Instead of employing a higher quality motor free of the defect that has caused multiple recalls of their products, Lasko added a fused plug to its newer fans which are subject to the same failure.
