Drug Warning: Trasylol
Generic name: aprotinin injection
Manufactured and marketed by: Bayer AG
Purpose: Prevent perioperative blood loss and the need for blood transfusion, in patients undergoing a procedure called coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.
Side Effects Reported
- The FDA has issued a public health advisory for Trasylol, after two scientific publications have linked Trasylol to higher risks of harmful side effects, including kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes.
Industry Report
The FDA has advised physicians to carefully monitor their patients for toxicity of the kidneys, heart, and central nervous system. Physicians have also been advised by the FDA to consider limiting use of Trasylol to situations "where the clinical benefit of reduced blood loss is essential to medical management of the patient and outweighs the potential risks."
