What Are DHEA Supplements?

In the United States, aging is not primarily viewed as gaining experience or becoming wiser, it is the enemy of happy living. Wrinkles, lines, graying, balding, losing muscle tone all are symptoms of the illness of growing older. The prevailing culture does not extol the virtues of eating healthy, keeping fit, and staying mentally active to combat the consequences of the aging process, instead pharmaceutical companies and supplement manufacturers suggest that consumers treat aging like they treat other illnesses; by taking a pill. DHEA pills or supplements are marketed as anti-aging pills. DHEA, when produced by the body naturally, is one of the chemicals that is eventually processed into testosterone in men or estrogen in women. DHEA is also marketed to consumers as a 'dietary supplement' but in reality it is a steroid hormone, and can potentially create lasting side-effects.

DHEA Lacks Credible Research to Support Anti-Aging Claims

To date there have been very few rigorously designed tests of the benefits or side-effects of DHEA when taken as a supplement. What little medically credible information that does exist does not point to any real observed benefit from taking DHEA supplements or DHEA pills, nor is there information on the long-term effects of DHEA. Many health-care professionals have concluded that the mere possibility of a benefit from taking a DHEA supplement does not outweigh the considerable risk of long-term side effects from the steroid hormone.

Supplement Manufacturers’ Misrepresentations

Unfortunately for consumers, there are hundreds of supplement peddlers who actively market and misrepresent the positive benefits of DHEA. Some claim to reduce the chance of cancer, or reduce the effects of aging, or increase exercise regimen effectiveness. None of these claims are strongly supported by scientific study, and consumers are advised not to continue taking DHEA supplements unless specifically directed to by a healthcare professional.
