Drug Watched: Cough and Cold Medicine

Purpose: Cough and cold medicine have been marketed to consumers as an effective way of reducing the symptoms of colds, particularly stopping the coughing. Now their effectiveness is being called into question.

Industry Report

The FDA has recently called into question the effectiveness of cold and cough medicine when used on small children. Their recommendation was not to administer such medicines to children under the age of 6. Many cold and cough medication still contain dosing information applicable to children as young as two. The FDA says that there is very little objective information or studies that show cough and cold medicine produce any results when administered on young children. In spite of the fact that cough and cold medicine haven't been proven to ameliorate colds and coughing, many consumers still give them to their children. Sales of cold and cough medicine for children could account for several billion dollars of annual revenue for the drug companies that produce them.

Seeger Weiss is not currently pursuing lawsuits on this, but its drug warnings will remain on our radar.
