Lawsuit charges probation dept liable in shooting of NY State trooper in 2007

A New York state trooper was shot and killed last year while taking part in a stakeout team tracking down a fleeing suspect in a Catskills farmhouse.
The widow of the slain trooper – David Brinkerhoff – has filed suit in St. Lawrence County, New York, charging that the county’s probation department repeatedly breached protocol in allowing a serial probation violator to break the terms of his release that led to the fateful shoot-out. Another trooper lost his hand in the gun battle.
The man surrounded by Trooper Brinkerhoff and his partners – Travis Trim – had repeatedly failed to honor the terms of his probation from prior drug and other arrests in St. Lawrence County. According to Mrs. Brinkerhoff’s complaint, when a fresh warrant was finally issued for Trim’s arrest in December 2006, the St. Lawrence probation department, incredibly, shredded it, ensuring that he would remain free to shoot another trooper and flee to the farmhouse in Margaretville, NY where Trooper Brinkerhoff was ultimately killed.
